October - Theme of the Month

It is now officially fall! It is the perfect time to announce the October theme of the month being all about preventing damage through the winter months. There are a lot of different things you can do to prevent damage from happening to your property, but here are several quick, but important steps to take!

  • Winter Supplies Check – Here in Kentucky, we do not experience a lot of snow, but when we do, it is sometimes a lot! Make sure to check now and make sure you have a good snow shovel or snow blower on hand. It is also a great time to check each vehicle you own to make sure they all have ice scrapers and anything else they may need during cold weather.
  • Check Air Filters – If you do not already regularly change your air filters, and this is a great time to start. The less debris caught in filters, more efficiently your system can run.
  • Clean Gutters – Especially in homes where there are a lot of trees around, gutters can quickly build up and become clogged.
  • Check for Drafts – When there are drafts around your doors and windows, the heat you are paying for quickly escapes.
  • Store Water Hoses – Putting away your garden hose for the year can help prevent frozen pipes from happening. As water freezes, it quickly expands, and can easily cause a pipe to bust.
  • Lawn Fertilizer – This may seem premature, but thinking about spring time, being proactive about your lawn can pay off! Putting down seeds and fertilizer early gives the seeds all winter to work their way deep into the ground where it can be the most useful.
  • Outdoor Furniture– Once the weather is too cold to use your outdoor furniture, it is a great idea to store it inside a garage or building or use winter cover to protect from harsh conditions. This can help make your furniture last as long as possible!
  • Fix Driveway Cracks– Small cracks can cause damage to your driveway. When water gets caught and freezes, it can cause major cracks. Filling in the small cracks now can prevent worse damage later!
  • Alarm Batteries – While this should be done at least twice a year, fall is a great time to start building the habit! Replace any batteries that are old or seem to not be fully charged.
